Infant Deaths From Unsafe Sleeping Double in Del.

Fifteen of the 18 babies who died were African-American.

A new report shows the number of babies who died in Delaware from unsafe sleeping conditions has doubled.

Eighteen infants died in fiscal year 2010 from unsafe sleeping conditions, compared to nine in fiscal year 2009. Fifteen of the 18 babies who died were African-American.

The report was released Monday by the Child Death, Near Death and Stillbirth Commission.

Of the 18 deaths, only one infant was sleeping in a crib. In 14 cases, the child was sharing a bed with someone.

Unsafe sleeping practices that can lead to death include allowing infants to sleep with their parents or letting them sleep in a bed pushed against a wall.

Experts say babies should sleep on their backs in cribs without stuffed animals or loose blankets that can obstruct their airways.
