Indicted Wildwood Mayor Loses Re-Election

Unofficial results show Mayor Gary DeMarzo came in fourth for three seats on the City Commission.

Indicted Wildwood Mayor Gary DeMarzo has lost re-election.

Unofficial results from Tuesday's election shows DeMarzo came in fourth for one of three seats on the City Commission.

Former Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr., who lost a recall vote in 2009, received the most votes.

DeMarzo has pleaded guilty to official misconduct charges.

Prosecutors have accused DeMarzo and a lawyer of improperly using public funds to pay for DeMarzo's defense in a conflict of interest case.

DeMarzo told The Press of Atlantic City the indictment played little role in the election's outcome.

DeMarzo believes he paid a price for supporting the city's 2011 budget, which includes the layoffs of as many as 42 public employees.

The new government will take office on May 17.
