Icy Conditions Disrupt Cape-May Lewes Ferry

For the third day in a row, icy conditions on the Delaware Bay caused officials to cancel the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

The first roundtrip run of Saturday morning, which normally departs Cape May at 7:30 a.m. and the leaves Lewes at 9.15 a.m., was canceled Friday. Authorities canceled the remaining day's trips -- including the 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Cape May and the 12:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. from Lewes -- early Saturday morning.

The ferry line, which shuttles pedestrians and vehicles 17 miles across the bay between Cape May, New Jersey and Lewes, Delaware, can't ship off because of an ice jams in the Cape May Canal and Lewes dock.

Thursday and Friday ferry runs were canceled after tug boats were unable to break up the ice, according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

Arctic air and strong winds produced ice buildup along small canals and narrow sections of rivers like the Delaware and Schuylkill farther north.
