2 Teens Shot in Woods Near Pa. High School

A single bullet from a hunter's weapon struck a boy and a girl, both 14, Tuesday afternoon near a Schuylkill County high school.

The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, while the girl was hit in the leg around 5 p.m.when a hunter discharged the remaining bullet in his gun in the woods behind Tamaqua Area High School, which is near the border of Tamaqua and Walker Township, according to police.

Both teens were airlifted to local hospitals-- the boy to St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem and the girl to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown -- and they remain in critical condition, authorities said.

The hunter told police he finished hunting for the day and then discharged the single remaining bullet, officials said. Investigators said the hunter heard the teens scream and called police.

The bullet came from a .270 caliber pump action rifle, according to authorities.

State police say the Pennsylvania Game Commission is investigating. A game commission spokesman hasn't responded to a request for details.
