New Jersey Troopers Exchange Gunfire With Shotgun-Toting Man After 911 Call Hang Up: Authorities

A shotgun-toting suspect was shot after exchanging gunfire with New Jersey state troopers, said authorities.

The incident occurred Friday night around 11:30 p.m. along Centerton Road in Upper Deerfield Township, Cumberland County, said the Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team.

Two uniformed troopers were responding to a hung up 911 call when gunfire was exchanged outside the suspect's home, said investigators.

The suspect, identified as Gerald Sykes, fired his shotgun once and was injured by return gunfire before retreating into his home.

Medics airlifted Sykes to Cooper University Hospital in Camden in critical but stable condition, said the AG's office.

Both troopers were evaluated at Inspira Medical Center in Vineland -- one with a graze wound either from a shotgun blast or flying glass, said the AG's office.

The state attorney general's office's investigation continued Saturday.
