Holmesburg Football Team Traveling to Florida for Tourney, Seeking Donations

The Holmesburg 14 and under football team is headed to Florida to compete in a national championship tournament.

The players and coaches boarded campers Friday morning to begin their journey to Kissimmee, Florida.

The Holmesburg Tigers football team is slated to compete in a national championship tournament beginning Friday until December 12.

A GoFundMe page has been created for the trip that is called "a once in a lifetime opportunity" for the players.

The team has been asking for donations for the trip. The city of Philadelphia chipped in $5,000 and the kids raised money by collecting change.

The team is still collecting donations for food during the trip. You can donate by visiting the team's GoFundMe page.

In addition to the Holmesburg Tigers, the Blackhawks, Philadelphia’s undefeated Junior Midget American Youth Football team, raised the money they needed and will also be going to Kissimmee, Florida as well. Players on the Blackhawks are 11-13 years old.

The Blackhawks will leave for Florida Friday afternoon.

The team needed $10,000 to attend the Nationals, so their coach, Ron Flowers, set up a GoFundMe account. The city of Philadelphia, as well as private individuals, contributed.

Interesting tidbit: The Blackhawks have the only female in the league on their team, Nadira Abdullah, a starting offensive linewoman.
