Health officials announced today that this season's flu shot is only 9 percent effective in protecting seniors against the most common and dangerous flu bug. And for all age groups, the overall effectiveness is a moderate 56-percent.

When it comes to prevention, most of us have heard this advice before-- wash your hands frequently, sanitize, and avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth.

But here's some advice you may not have heard, from an internist who practices holistic medicine.

Dr. Frederick Burton tells NBC10 that to guard against the flu, you should arm yourself with a colloidal silver solution to disinfect your nostrils.

"So if you daily disinfect your nasal passages you can stay ahead of that and usually don't get a problem," says Dr. Burton.

He also recommends the supplement called Immuplex, a combination of vitamins and minerals, that will boost your immune system.

Dr. Burton says if you end up feeling flu-like symptoms of fever, coughing and sneezing-- vitamins are your best defense.

"That's to cure the virus once you know you're infected. First sign of a cold or the flu-- beta carotene and garlic."

These homeopathic products can be found at health food stores, according to Dr. Burton, who also says overall health and diet will help your body fight off the virus.
