The woman's bike was crushed in the hit-and-run accident.
A female cyclist remains in critical condition after an elderly man allegedly hit her with his pickup truck in Center City and then sped off, leaving the scene Friday.
The hit-and-run took place at 22nd and Market Streets around 7 p.m. Police said the woman, who is in her 40's, was trying to cross the street when she was struck by the 79-year-old man, who was making a right turn in his red, pickup truck.
"When they took the man out of the vehicle, he was completely incoherent, could not stand on his own. He was obviously intoxicated," Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police told NBCPhiladelphia.
The woman was thrown nearly 20 feet off her bike and onto the street. Emergency officials rushed the woman to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she is being treated for extreme trauma to the head and face.
The SEPTA police saw what happened and caught up to the man, who had not stopped, at 22nd and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. He is currently in custody, under investigation for DUI.
