Weeks After Police Found 983 Bags of Heroin in Purse, Marshals Arrest Woman's Driver: Police

About six weeks after police charged a woman who they said carried 983 bags of heroin in her purse, U.S. Marshals nabbed the man investigators said drove the car where the woman was found.

Marshals caught up to Joshua Smallwood along Holloway Terrace in New Castle, Delaware Monday.

Investigators charged Smallwood, 27, with failure to stop, resisting arrest, heroin possession, firearms possession and traffic charges.

Officers had searched for the Delaware man following a Dec. 10 traffic stop along W 11th Street, said New Castle Police.

Investigators said police pulled over Smallwood’s car after an officer witnessed an apparent drug deal nearby. During a search of the car, police found 14 grams of heroin in Smallwood’s passenger’s purse.

Police arrested the woman but Smallwood made a dash for it, running toward a nearby Domino’s Pizza where he jumped into a running car and led police on a pursuit. Officers called off the pursuit because they said Smallwood’s reckless driving put the public in danger.

Smallwood was sent to county jail in lieu of $60,000 bond.
