The Pennyslvania Department of Environmental Protections confirms that it was low levels of oxygen in Ridley Park Lake that killed hundreds of fish two weekends ago.
According to Ridley Park Police Chief Tom Byrne, authorities were notified of the dead fish around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.
Water samples were tested initially, but those samples showed no sign of a problem -- neither pesticides nor other harmful contaminants.
A second set of samples sent to the lab revealed low levels of oxygen in the water -- too low to keep the fish alive, according to the DEP.
"To a point, I am happy,” Ridley Park Borough Council President Bob Berger told the Delaware County Daily Times. “But moving forward between the CRC (Chester-Ridley-Crum Watersheds Association) and DELCORA (Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control), we are going to have our lake tested twice a week throughout the summer and stay on top of any future problems."
