Pa. Man Broke Out of Cuffs for Sanitizer: Cops

Authorities say a Northampton man who briefly got out of his handcuffs after being arrested for drunken driving said he needed to get a nearby bottle of hand sanitizer.

Police say Nazareth resident Jeffrey Barlow was arrested in Bethlehem early Wednesday after an officer saw his vehicle driving without headlights.

The 22-year-old was arrested for alleged drunken driving and taken to the police station. While there, police say he struck his handcuffs against a bench and disengaged the lock.

The Morning Call of Allentown reports he made it only a few steps before an officer spotted him on camera. Police say Barlow told the officer, “at least let me get some hand sanitizer while I'm up.”

It could not immediately be determined if Barlow had an attorney.
