Hurricane Irene ranks as one of the top five worst storms, according to PECO.
At the height of the outages, about 500,000 customers lost power.
PECO said that by Monday afternoon, service to close to 350,000 customers had been restored.
PECO crews were assisted by workers from Pittsburgh, Michigan and Florida. Workers from PECO’s Chicago-based sister utility, ComEd, were still on the job in the around-the-clock effort to repair unprecedented damage and restore service to all customers.
As of Monday at 3 p.m., PECO reported over 160,000 customers without service:
- Bucks County = 70,000
- Chester County = 51,000
- Delaware County = 29,000
- Montgomery County = 11,000
- Philadelphia County = 2,500
- York County = 4,400
PECO officials said service is expected to be restored to about 90 percent of customers by Wednesday night.

“Our PECO crews and supplemental field forces have made tremendous progress while working in very difficult, dangerous conditions,” said Denis O’Brien, president and CEO of ECO. “We now estimate that service will be restored to all customers by the holiday weekend.”
PECO reminded customers to stay away from downed power lines and damaged equipment.
Customers in flooded areas should also stay away from any flood-covered electric equipment and never enter basements that are flooded.
