Gunman Opens Fire on Driver, Birthday Passengers

A gunman opened fire on a van carrying friends who were celebrating a birthday.

The driver and two passengers had just left the Liquid Room Restaurant and Bar on N. 2nd Street when someone fired at least a dozen shots at their van.

The driver was hit twice. He tried to keep going, but crashed into a building in the 200 block of Master Street, where the 30-year-old man died behind the wheel.

His passenger was shot five times. Police say he was still able to walk out of the van. He is in critical condition at Hahnemann Hospital.

"No suspects. No motive that we know of," said Philadelphia police Captain Frank Llewellyn. "There is some surveillance video outside the bar. Homicide will recover that."

The woman in the back of the car walked away without a scratch. It was her birthday the group was celebrating.
