Gunman Found Dead After Barricade Situation in South Jersey

A gunman was found dead inside a South Jersey home after a barricade situation forced a dozen residents to evacuate their nearby homes.

Members of the fugitive task force arrived at a townhome on Buckingham Drive in West Deptford, N.J. around 1:20 p.m. Monday to serve 24-year-old William Schickel with an arrest warrant.

The task force left the home and called in the SWAT team as well as other police departments.

A barricade situation was declared and at least 12 residents from neighboring townhomes were evacuated, according to the American Red Cross of South Jersey.

After several hours, the SWAT team entered the home and found the man's body inside. Investigators say he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld says Schickel was wanted on a parole violation from a burglary conviction. He also was a suspect in another burglary in which a gun was taken.

Neighbors were permitted to return to their homes just before 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to officials.
