Animal welfare officials say more than a dozen people have been arrested following a late-night raid on an alleged dogfighting operation.
Police and the Pennsylvania SPCA raided a home on the 2600 block of Garrett Street in the city's Grays Ferry neighborhood around midnight Monday. Between 15 and 20 people were arrested, according to NBC10's Justin Pizzi.
SPCA director of law enforcement George Bengal says that this raid is one of the largest they've ever made and that the suspects have been on their radar for some time now.
He also says the dogs were engaging in a fight in a front bedroom when authorities arrived.
According to Bengal, seven beaten, bloody and battered dogs were taken from the property.
Authorities say that this raid was only one of many.
Humane Law Enforcement Officers and the SPCA also raided a home on the 2800 block of Boudinot Street in the Kensington section of the city this morning and are moving to a third location at Kensington and Potter Streets, according to an SPCA press release.
