Governor “Open” to Police Reforms in Delaware

A spokeswoman for Gov. Jack Markell says the governor is open to reforms to policing in the state following police-involved killings in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City.

Leaders of Delaware's NAACP met recently with the Democratic governor and asked him to take steps to improve the relationship between police and black communities. NAACP officials asked the governor to create and fund liaisons to black communities who would report directly to law enforcement leaders.

Markell spokeswoman Kelly Bachman tells The News Journal of Wilmington that he's made no decision on that or other proposals. But she says the governor "remains open to ongoing discussions" on strengthening relations between police and the community.

The NAACP also asked Markell to push for a civilian advisory panel to review police-involved shootings.
