Acting New Jersey Governor Kim Guadagno Hurt in Bike Crash at Jersey Shore

Acting Gov. Kim Guadagno was taken to a hospital by ambulance on Thursday following a morning bike accident that left her with broken bones.

Guadagno was riding her bike in Sea Bright when she stopped suddenly to avoid a vehicle and fell, a spokesman for the governor's office said. She was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she was being treated for a broken elbow and wrist, said the spokesman, Kevin Roberts.

"She's alert and in good spirits and will be staying overnight for routine observation," Roberts said.

Guadagno serves as acting governor when Gov. Chris Christie is out of state, a frequent occurrence, especially as Christie travels the country boosting Republican candidates in his role as chair of the Republican Governors Association.

Christie, who's considering a run for president, was in Arizona on Thursday attending events on behalf of GOP candidate Doug Ducey and will travel to Colorado and Iowa on Friday to campaign there.

Christie recently questioned the necessity of the acting governor title, arguing that he remains closely in touch with his staff, even while out of state.

Guadagno maintained the title through the day, Roberts said, but skipped a noon event in Camden, where she had been scheduled to take a tour of the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center with Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin. Her bike accident was first reported by The Record newspaper.
