Good Samaritan Saves 8 From Burning Boat Off Jersey Shore: Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard says a good Samaritan rescued eight people from a burning boat off the coast of New Jersey.

The Coast Guard says watchstanders received a distress call late Sunday afternoon saying a 40-foot recreational boat was ablaze several miles off the coast of Middletown Township.

Officials say rescue and fire crews found the boat but that a civilian boater, who hasn't been identified, had already responded and safely transferred the people off the burning vessel.

The Coast Guard helped firefighters put out the blaze, but officials say the boat was unrecoverable and sank in 85 feet of water.

Officials say the boat didn't leave pollution behind.

The boaters were taken ashore and were treated for minor medical concerns.
