Wanted: A Few Good Men

How would you like to be a hero and save someone’s life? To be a firefighter, you have to be brave and want to help others. If you have what it takes, want to work in a fast paced environment or help your community why not join a fire department?

And you should join up with the Glassboro Fire Department in Glassboro, N.J., which is in need of volunteers. Over the years, the number of volunteers in Glassboro has declined and they’re now looking for new members to join their accomplished, dedicated team.

When Kris Vandexter, chief volunteer of Glassboro Fire Department wanted to join the fire department 20 years ago, he had to be in a waiting list.

“I waited two and a half years to become a member,” said Vandexter.

In the last 20 years the department has seen a major decline in their roaster. They are down 27 members, according to Vendexter.

President of the New Jersey State Firemen's Association George Helfich said he had never seen this happen before.

“I don't know what the answer is," Helfich told the Courier Post. “I don't know how these towns can recruit volunteers. There are no (tangible) incentives."

But there are many benefits to becoming a firefighter such as a great sense of brotherhood and accomplishment. It also allows you to become more active and involved in your community.

“All citizens should be involved in their community whether that is being a Little League coach or a firefighter member,” said Volunteer Chief, Kris Vandexter. “I think it’s important to be involved in something [in your community] somehow.”

To join the Glassboro Fire Department you need to be a borough resident and at least 18-years-old.
