Animal Causes South Jersey Store to Catch Fire

An animal apparently caused a New Jersey store to go up in flames.

A Gloucester Township Police officer spotted heavy smoke coming from an unoccupied unit of the Glendora Plaza along Black Horse Pike in Glendora around 9:25 p.m. Tuesday.

The officer called in firefighters and police evacuated a nearby home.

Officers blocked off Black Horse Pike from Station Avenue to Chews Landing Road for about two hours as firefighters extinguished the flames — keeping the blaze from spreading to neighboring businesses, said police.

One township police officer was treated for minor smoke inhalation and released.

An investigation determined that a heater damaged by an animal caused the blaze and investigators didn't consider the fire suspicious.
