Suspected Drunk Driver Flees DWI Checkpoint, Crashes Into Sign Next to College

Police: DWI suspect caught after car chase, crash

An accused drunken driver who allegedly fled from a drunk driving checkpoint was captured when he crashed into a sign for a South Jersey apartment complex.

Glassboro Police tell the South Jersey Times that officers targeting suspected drunken and impaired drivers as part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" program had stopped 62-year-old Bruce Berry Jr. around 11:30 p.m. Friday. The Barrington resident initially stopped his vehicle, but soon sped off with officers in pursuit.

A brief chase ensued through residential neighborhoods south of Rowan University's campus. It ended when Berry's vehicle crashed into the sign in front of the Campus Crossing complex on Route 322 -- the colleges are across the street from Rowan's campus.

Berry was charged with eluding police and several motor vehicle violations. His bail was set at $25,000 cash, and it wasn't known if he had retained an attorney.
