Pennsylvania Man Facing Trial in Bloody Slaying of Girlfriend's Cat

An eastern Pennsylvania man who police say beat his girlfriend's cat to death for scratching him will face trial.

Scott Deater was charged in August with animal cruelty in the July killing.

The 24-year-old Bethlehem man said Tuesday he would give up his right to a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors say they can't comment on any possible plea deals in the case.

Police said Deater was left alone with the 1-year-old, male cat at a Freemansburg home and later told his girlfriend that he had injured the pet.

Police say that when they arrived, the walls and floor were spattered with blood and the cat was dead on the living room floor.

Deater does not currently have a lawyer.
