15-year-old Gina Gentile (pictured) and her friend 15-year-old Vanessa Dorwart were struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Norwood Feb. 25.
Friends and family of one of the two girls killed by an Amtrak train Thursday morning say that 16-year-old Gina Gentile was hit hard by the death of her boyfriend last month.
The Interboro High School sophomore had been dating 17-year-old Bill Bradley for a year, when he was struck and killed by a car while biking over to see Gentile on Jan. 19, Gentile’s grandmother Rosalia Giordano told the Inquirer.
The night before Gentile and her friend Vanessa Dorwart, also a friend of Bradley, were inexplicably standing on the train tracks at the Norwood SEPTA station, several teens gathered to share stories and poems about their lost friend, Bradley, Giordano said.
“Bill. Life without you here is not going to be the same,” Gentile wrote on the “R.I.P. Bill Bradley” Facebook page. “Save a spot for me Pumpkinn.”
Police are still investigating whether the fatal collision was an accident or suicide.
Gentile, Dorwart and a third Interboro High School girl, Kelly Cashwell, all left school Thursday morning, according to school officials.
The three girls were seen by a SEPTA ticket agent yelling or arguing on the southbound train platform just minutes before Gentile and Dorwart were fatally struck at 10:28 a.m. by a high-speed Acela train coming up from Washington, D.C.
Dorwart’s and Gentile’s cell phones were found intact at the scene, and police say they are sending the phones to a forensic lab to see the last texts the teens were sending before they died.
The Medical Examiner’s office hopes to complete the autopsies by late this afternoon. Toxicology reports may not be available for weeks.
There will be a candlelight vigil for the two girls at the Norwood train station 6:30 p.m. Friday.
