Street Racing May Be to Blame for Crash that Killed Toddler in North Philadelphia

A toddler who died late Monday after a suspected street-racing teen struck a car she was traveling in with her mother and grandmother has been identified as 3-year-old Esther Alejandra Palmer.

Little Esther, identified by family members, was in the back of a blue Honda with her mother and grandmother on York Street crossing 2nd in North Philadelphia about 7:15 p.m. Monday when police say a tan Honda driven by a 17-year-old plowed into the side of their vehicle. The impact was so strong that it threw the little girl through the window and out of the car.

She died of her injuries a short time later at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

The girl's mother and grandmother were both in stable condition Tuesday.

A 3-year-old girl died Monday after the car she was in was struck by a teen driver. Police say the teen may have been involved in a street race prior to the crash. NBC10’s Keith Jones has the details.

The 17-year-old driving the striking vehicle, who police say may have been involved in a street race, was taken to Temple University Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Police say the teen boy may have been racing another car at the time of the crash. Witnesses say they spotted a car, that may have been involved in the race, fleeing the scene on York Street after the accident. Police are currently looking at surveillance video to confirm.
