Get Ready to “Do AC!”

The New Jersey beach town is changing its advertising campaign to a very direct "Do AC!" from the eight-year-old "Always Turned on"

It’s no longer about being “Always Turned On” in Atlantic City.

The town known for casinos, gaming, entertainment and nightlife is set to change its eight-year-old advertising campign to a more direct “Do AC!,” reports the Press of Atlantic City. Along with the opening of Atlantic City’s new $2.4 billion mega-resort Revel, the change is set to take place in late April and is backed by a $30 million investment to spread the message.

“We all want Atlantic City to be the mecca for entertainment and tourism on the East Coast,” 2nd Ward City Councilman Marty Small tells the newspaper. “When you’re having a discussion with your friend, you say, ‘Let’s do Vegas,’ or ‘Let’s do Philly,’ (meaning) ‘Let’s go.’ It’s creative, it’s catchy. The bottom line is, we want people to do A.C.”

Others see the new slogan’s implied sexual innuendo as problematic or uncreative. Joe Kelly, a local radio DJ at southern New Jersey’s Cat Country 107.3, weighed in with some commentary on his station’s website.

“Gone is ‘America’s Favorite Playground,’ and the more recent ‘Always Turned on,” Kelly writes. “Now, it’s ‘Do AC!’ Huh. Am I the only one who finds this a little too sexual in nature? ‘Hey honey, let’s go Do AC!’ Huh. ‘Maybe after we ‘Do AC!’, we could go ‘Do Consumer Square.’”
