Robber Shoots Gas Station Clerk

An armed robber opened fire on a Montgomery County gas station clerk working the graveyard shift alone.

A group of three to five men wearing hoodies and backpacks rushed the A-Plus store at the Sunoco station at Dekalb Pike (U.S. Route 202) and Germantown Pike in East Norriton, Pa. around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to East Norriton Township Police.

At least one of the men carried a gun and shot the clerk in the leg, said East Norriton Police Sgt. David Boyer.

Boyer said that surveillance video showed the entire encounter.

"It looks like from the video that the reason that he was shot was that he couldn't get the register open," said Boyer.

The men eventually did get into the register. They made off with an undetermined amount of cash and also packages of cigarettes.

Medics from Plymouth Ambulance rushed the clerk to Paoli Hospital, according to police.

Police investigated the incident through the early morning.

The store normally has a policy for the overnight clerk to not open the door to the business from midnight to 5. Boyer said they were investigating how the suspects got inside.

This isn't the first area Sunoco to be robbed. A nearby station in Norristown has been hit at least four times in the last two years, Boyer said.

It also wasn't the only robbery of the morning in the area. A robbery held up the VIST bank down Dekalb Pike shortly after 8 a.m.
