Crews Continue Clean Up of Gas Leak in Chester County

Crews continue their work Sunday to clean up several thousand gallons of gasoline that leaked from a Chester County holding facility.

The gasoline began leaking around 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Buckeye Terminals Malvern's mobile tank farm on Malin Road in East Whiteland Township, Pa., a Buckeye spokesperson says. The tank farm is a terminal where gas is held before being delivered to gas stations.

A gasket broke on a vapor recovery unit causing the fuel to leak from a 10,000 gallon tank onto the ground and into the storm sewer system, according to Buckeye Terminals. While officials have determined several thousand gallons of gasoline were released, they've been unable to determine a total amount.

Crews worked for several hours Saturday to stop the leak and contain the spill. They will continue the cleanup Sunday.

“The release is contained…it’s isolated and so we are in the remediation phase of cleaning it up,” said Buckeye spokesperson David Boone.

The company says crews will be testing groundwater and wells to determine whether they've been contaminated.

Several nearby businesses were evacuated due to the leak.

Authorities closed several roads near the spill but they have since been reopened.

Buckeye Terminals have set up a hot line for anyone who may have been affected by the leak. To make a claim, call  800-994-0729.
