Gambling Panel Revokes Philly Casino License

State gambling regulators have revoked the license for a long-stalled Philadelphia casino project.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on Thursday rejected a request for another extension for the former Foxwoods Philadelphia project along a stretch of the Delaware River waterfront.

It was the first time the agency has revoked a $50 million casino license.

The 6-1 vote came despite weeks of work from the project's backers and their new partner, casino giant Caesars Entertainment, to assemble new financing, ownership and design plans.

Investors, including the Connecticut Indian tribe that owns Foxwoods Casino there, first won a license four years ago. But the project stalled amid local opposition and the recession that sapped the tribe's finances. The gaming board began threatening to revoke the license last year.
