Funeral Flag for WW2 Vet Stolen: Cops

Harriet Laury says someone stole the flag laid on the coffin of her husband, a World War 2 veteran who died back in 2009.

Police are searching for the person responsible for stealing an elderly woman’s beloved flag.

Harriet Laury’s husband, Ben Laury Sr., was a World War II bomber pilot. When Ben died back in 2009, a flag was laid on his coffin as part of the military funeral. For Memorial Day, Harriet tied the flag to the porch railing of her Ocean City condo on Asbury Avenue. Sometime during that holiday weekend, Harriet says the flag was stolen.

“We usually sit there and have breakfast,” said Harriet. “All the neighbors come over. I said ‘oh my goodness, it’s gone!”

Harriet had wanted the flag for Ben’s 16 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. She says whoever stole it didn’t understand how much it meant to her and the rest of Ben’s family.

“So many memories,” said Harriet. “We had an offer to have it replaced and it just won’t be the same because it wasn’t on his casket. Sure I want it back. But I don’t have much hope.”

Police continue to investigate. If you have any information on the incident, please call Ocean City Police at 609-399-0455.
