Vince Fumo counts down his remaining hours of freedom before the 65-year-old is sent away to prison for what, quite possibly, could be the rest of his life.
The former state senator could be sentenced to 14 years Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Originally Fumo was facing a maximum of 27 years, but a judge cut the sentencing guidelines in half on Friday.
Federal courts convicted Fumo on 137 counts of conspiracy, fraud, obstructing justice and tax violations in March. Fumo is appealing his conviction and asking for leniency, considering his health problems and long career as a public servant.
Fumo’s appeal cites insufficient evidence and a juror’s online posts on Twitter and Facebook among the issues, says the Associated Press.
Prosecutors plan to seek more than 10 years Tuesday morning. Fumo has also been ordered to pay nearly $2 million in restitution.
He is currently free on bail.
