Former State Senator Vince Fumo told his doctor he abused alcohol and prescription drugs to help him cope with his trial, according to unsealed court documents released Friday.

Fumo’s attorney filed the documents in an effort to have his prison sentence reduced to three years behind bars, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Under the Federal Bureau of Prisons policy, Fumo could take off a year of his 55-month sentence by enrolling in a substance abuse treatment program while he is in jail, according to the paper.

Earlier motions by Fumo’s attorney to delay reporting to jail on the August 31st were denied by Judge Buckwalter last week.

In addition to his addiction to Xanax and alcohol, Fumo has taken Ambien to sleep and Prozac to fight depression, according to the paper.

Prosecutors called the move “Fumo’s latest effort to deceive the court and manipulate the judicial process."

Fumo is expected to report to prison as scheduled.
