Company Recreates Historic Battle Flag

A Pennsylvania company is replicating the fabric of the huge American flag that flew over the 1814 Battle of Baltimore.

WHTM-TV reports that the company, Family Heirloom Weavers of Red Lion, York County, Pa. plans to send the fabric to Maryland on Monday.

Maryland Historical Society volunteers will help sew the flag so it can fly at the Sept. 14 Defender's Day celebration at Fort McHenry, the battle's anniversary.

Francis Scott Key's poem “Defence of Fort McHenry” became the lyrics for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The society says Family Heirloom Weavers is recreating the original flag material of English wool bunting, which was common in flag-making before nylon.

Patrick Kline of Family Heirloom Weavers says the fabric will measure about 30 feet by 40 feet. Weaving it took two weeks.

"It's going to be just like the original," said Kline told WHTM. "It’s quite a big flag. The whole weaving process doing the 112-115 yards of red, 112-115 yards of white, and the 75 yards of blue took us about two weeks."
