Friends, Family Mourn Men Killed in I-476 Crash

Friends and family are mourning two men who were killed during a multi-vehicle accident on I-476 Sunday.

Thomas Brennan of Lansdale, Pennsylvania and Jason Anderson, 33, of Dover, Delaware were killed in a multi-vehicle accident on I-476 near Marple Road in Marple Township, police said.

A tractor trailer was traveling southbound on I-476 and lost control due to ice on the roads. The tractor trailer then jackknifed and became disabled in the left lane, blocking all lanes of travel.

Several vehicles were unable to avoid the tractor trailer in time. A man driving a Nissan Altima crashed into the trailer, suffering a head injury. Brennan and Anderson also drove under the trailer, becoming lodged underneath the vehicle.

Brennan and Anderson were both pronounced dead at the scene. Four other drivers also suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

"You just don't know what's going to happen in the next minute of your life," said Rich Hermann, Brennan's neighbor. "We're flabbergasted."

Hermann told NBC10 Brennan was heading to the airport for a business trip at the time of the crash.

"Tom was fairly outgoing," Hermann said. "When Tom walked into the room, you knew Tom was in the room."

Jason Anderson, who was the senior director of ticket sales and operations for Dover International Speedway, was driving back to his home in Dover with his wife and 1-year-old son at the time of the accident. Anderson's wife was injured in the crash. His son was not harmed however.

“Jason’s death is a tragic loss for all of us who considered him a close friend as well as a loss for Dover International Speedway,” said Dover International Speedway President Mike Tatoian. “He was an exemplary employee who always put customers and co-workers first. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family during this very difficult time.”

In all, 11 vehicles were involved in the crash. Officials have not yet revealed the condition of the driver of the Nissan Altima. They continue to investigate the accident.

The fatal pileup is one of many accidents that happened across Delaware County Sunday as icy roads caused dangerous conditions for drivers. Authorities announced drivers should stay off the roads as the slippery conditions remain.
