Police: Fallen Tree Caused Del. Train Derailment

Delaware State Police say the derailment of a Norfolk Southern freight train over the weekend was caused by a fallen tree on the tracks.

Police said Monday that a pine three to four feet in diameter had fallen on the tracks north of Millsboro because of soil saturation from heavy rain.

Investigators said a locomotive hit the tree Sunday, causing the train to derail.

Fifteen cars left the tracks, overturning and spilling their cargo of stone. Two locomotives also derailed but remained upright.

There were no injuries.
