Free Fans for the Elderly to Beat the Heat

Senior citizens are given fans to help cool down in dangerous heat

With record-breaking temperatures and a heat index that makes even the sun worshipers wish for winter, staying hydrated and keeping cool is a must -- especially for the elderly.

Well, the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation is lending a hand in these dangerous days and providing 300 free box fans to senior citizens at the Philadelphia Senior Center on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Comcast-Spectacor employees will be handing out fans at the center while supplies last.

Make sure to show up early -- it's a first-come, first-serve basis. In order to receive a fan you must be 55 or older and present ID with to prove it.

PSC is located on 509 S. Broad St. in Center City. For more information call 215.546.5879 and make sure to take the right steps to heat safety.

PSC advises you follow these heat advisory suggestions:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty and avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine.
  • Wear light-colored, lightweight, loose clothing. Wear a hat or use an umbrella.
  • Spend as much time as possible in an air-conditioned environment (like PSC).
  • Take additional cool baths and showers; use a spray bottle to sprinkle yourself with water.
  • Travel when heat is less intense (morning hours).
  • Check with your doctor about your medication or any illness you may have and any special directions he/she may have during the hot weather.
