Forum Held in Bryn Mawr for Community Trying to Understand Teen Suicide

In the wake of a popular teen’s suicide, the community comes together to understand why.

A forum will be held Thursday night on suicide prevention and other mental health issues for teens at Thomas Great Hall on Bryn Mawr College's campus. The event is hosted by the group Minding Your Mind.

“It’s a growing problem, and I think young people are just bombarded 24 hours with social media, news and academic pressure,” said Trish Larsen, executive director of Minding Your Mind.

The organization has been inundated with calls from concerned parents following the death of 13-year-old Cayman Naib of Newtown Square.

Naib's ordeal played out publicly as the teen was initially thought to be missing before his body was found earlier this month on his family's property. The Shipley School student was reportedly under pressure to get his school work done in the weeks before he took his own life. The tragedy grabbed the attention of people from across our region and brought about concerns from other parents.

The group website, Mindingyourmind.org, crashed last weekend due to heavy traffic from worried parents looking for answers and information on what has become the second leading cause of death among young people.

The forum is free and will be held Thursday evening at Bryn Mawr College at 7 p.m. Parents are encouraged to attend with students in 6th grade and above.
