Police in Florida Shoot, Kill Sex Assault Suspect After He Posted Bail in Philadelphia

Police shot and killed a Philadelphia man wanted on sexual assault charges outside of a Florida burger joint.

Lakeland police officers shot David Cuevas outside a Lakeland Five Guys.

Two detectives were chasing the 42-year-old Philly man when he reached into his waistband, turned toward them and pulled a pistol, said police.

The Ledger of Lakeland  reported Cuevas was wanted on an arrest warrant issued in January for armed sexual battery and kidnapping involving a Lakeland woman he was involved with.

Cuevas fled to Pennsylvania, where he was arrested on the Lakeland warrant last month. Pennsylvania courts records list that Cuevas posted $35,000 bail after having his bail decreased from $350,000 on Feb. 9. He then broke terms of his bail by leaving the Philadelphia area, said police.

After bonding out of jail, Cuevas started texting the woman again and let her know that he wanted to meet up with her, said police.

She called police, who helped her arrange a meeting for Thursday. When Cuevas saw the officers, he started running. While pulling out his gun, Ceuvas shot himself in the leg, police told the Tampa Tribune.

An investigation continues. As per policy, the officers were placed on administrative leave.
