Flooding Strands Drivers Near New Jersey Coast

Heavy rain caused flooding that stranded drivers near the Jersey Shore Thursday evening.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for towns including Toms River, Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights, Mantaloking, Island Heights and other coastal towns

In Toms River, police said they had to rescue stranded motorists on Route 37 and other roads -- mkaing 20 to 30 rescues in a short period of time. There were also reports of flooding at Adams Avenue and Bash Road in Toms River.

Police asked motorists to avoid Route 37 east of Vaughn Avenue until at least 8 p.m.

The weather service says a thunderstorm produced as much as 3 inches of rain already. It warned residents to move to higher ground immediately. Another 1 to 2 inches of rain was possible in the area.

Reports of lightning also came in from Seaside Heights, Ocean Gate and Berkeley Township.

No injuries were reported.
