Floodwaters Trap Drivers on Same Pittsburgh Road Where 4 Died in 2011 Floods

People in two cars managed to escape after electronic warning gates failed to keep them off a flooded Pittsburgh road where four people died in flash floods five years ago.

Washington Boulevard flooded after more than two inches of rain fell quickly Sunday evening. Two women and two children died on the same road in August 2011 when their cars were submerged. The electronic gates installed since, which are supposed to be activated by rain sensors, failed on Sunday so police had to manually block the road.

The same storm system is also being blamed for flooding in Connellsville, about 35 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, where school was canceled Monday.

Residents there had to be rescued by crews in boats after runoff from heavy rains quickly flooded part of that city.
