Sinkhole Shuts Down EL

Service back to normal after sinkhole

A water mess in Fishtown, following a water main break and sinkhole.

It happened in the 1300 block of Front Street around 8 a.m.

It is not yet clear if the sinkhole caused the water main; or if the water main caused the sinkhole.

Because of the sinkhole Septa’s EL was forced to stop shuttling service between 5th and Berks Streets.  Also Septa was single tracking on the westbound side at  2nd and 5th Street stops. All service on the EL has returned to normal.

About 15 to 20 homes and businesses are still without water as a result of the break.

The Water Department has turned water off to make repairs and hopes to have water restored by late afternoon.

It is not yet clear if the weather had anything to do with the water main break, so an investigation into the cause is on going.
