What to Know

  • A First Alert for heat and severe storms is in effect through Saturday evening for most of the Philadelphia region.
  • The heat index could get to 100 as another heat wave is expected.
  • Scattered downpours and localized flooding are possible as storms move through.

Severe storms moved through the region Tuesday night, causing damage and power outages across the area, and more storms could be on the way this week.

A First Alert is in effect through Saturday evening for the entire Philadelphia region with the exception of the Jersey Shore as storms and oppressive heat are expected for the rest of the week.

On Tuesday, the storms brought heavy rain, wind and lightning. There were several reports of trees down in the Philly suburbs throughout the evening. At one point PECO reported more than 10,000 customers without power in Chester County and more than 13,000 without power in Delaware County.

Earlier in the day, a dome of high pressure was parked over the region, allowing temperatures to once again reach the 90s with high humidity. This pattern will remain in place through Saturday, with the heat building a little more each day during this 4th of July week.
