Black Philly Firefighters, Union Settle Dispute

A disagreement has been settled between black firefighters and Philadelphia’s firefighters’ union over alleged anti-minority sentiment.

Club Valiants Inc. and the local branch of the International Association of Fire Fighters say they're working to end a dispute that led to a 2009 civil rights lawsuit involving the NAACP.

The black firefighters filed a suit of alleged harassment and abuse, claiming that racially hostile remarks were posted in the union's online chat room.  They also claimed that the leadership of the Philadelphia firefighters union is overwhelmingly white.

On Wednesday, a joint statement was released stating that both parties have agreed to work together to "foster respect, unity and diversity among their members."
