Fire Traps, Kills Disabled New Jersey Dad

A disabled man has died after a fire broke out in his central New Jersey home and trapped him in his bedroom.

Edison Township fire officials say the 68-year-old victim lived at the home with his wife and daughter, who were both able to safely escape.

NJ.com reports the man, who was immobilized due to a medical condition, called his daughter on the phone around 10:50 p.m. Friday to tell her there was a fire. She called 911 and tried to enter his bedroom, but was overcome by smoke.

Three police officers soon arrived and also tried to enter the man's bedroom, but they also were overcome by smoke. The man's body was later found by firefighters.

Authorities say an overloaded surge protector apparently caused the blaze.
