Fire Closes Tacony-Palmyra Bridge During Evening Rush

The bridge was closed for over an hour after a fire at the base of a support beam

Traffic is moving again on the Tacony-Palmyra bridge, after fire closed the bridge for about an hour.

Pat Reilly, from the Burlington County Bridge Commission, called the fire a "freak accident," and explained how it started.

"The wooden bulkheads on the pier below one of our towers must have caught on fire from a spark from an elect rial line," said Reilly.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. at the anchorage of the bridge, which is the base of one of the support beams.

A Camden City Fire boat responded to help put out the fire, because several fire companies couldn't get a good angle to spray water.
