Few Primary Battles for New Jersey Assembly Seats This Year

One pair of candidates for New Jersey state Assembly is already on cable television with a commercial.

The two incumbent Democrats in the Union County-based 20th District are facing challenges from two slates of opponents in the June 2 primary.

Each of New Jersey's 40 legislative districts elects two members of the Assembly. All 80 seats are up for election this year. Major-party candidates had to submit petitions to run by Monday.

Only seven districts have competitive primaries. But some of them are packed races. In the 31st District in Hudson County, eight Democrats are vying for two spots on the ballot in the November general election.

In one district, no Democrats are running at all.

Democrats currently control 48 Assembly seats to the Republicans' 32.
