Fellow Officer on Fallen Sergeant: ‘Your Grandson Will Be Legend'

In an emotional ceremony on Wednesday, a hero plaque was dedicated in memory of Philadelphia Police Sgt. Robert Wilson III, the officer killed in a shootout with robbers at a North Philadelphia store earlier this year.

On the day he was murdered in the line of duty, Wilson stopped at a GameStop store on Lehigh Avenue near 22nd Street in North Philadelphia to buy his son a birthday gift. When two men entered the store and announced a robbery, Wilson courageously exchanged gunfire with the robbers, police said, protecting customers and employees in the store. Wilson was fatally wounded in the process, and both men have been charged with murder in his death.

A hero plaque in Wilson's memory was dedicated on Wednesday. He was previously honored with medals for valor and honor.

"Your grandson will be legend. I'll make sure no one forgets his name," an officer who graduated from the police academy alongside Wilson told his family at the plaque ceremony. "I'm sure everybody in the 22nd [District] was proud to have worked with that man."

GameStop sponsored Wilson's plaque.
