Feds Demand $271 M From NJ Transit for Scrapped Tunnel

NJ Transit says it does not agree that the issues are as clear cut as portrayed

NJ Transit's board meets Wednesday, just days after learning the federal government wants $271 million for the scrapped Hudson River rail tunnel.

The Federal Transit Administration on Monday sent the railroad the bill for the so-called Access to the Region's Core project. Gov. Chris Christie canceled it last month, citing cost overruns.

NJ Transit says it is reviewing the request and is assessing its options. NJ Transit says it does not agree that the issues are as clear cut as portrayed in the FTA letter.

Officials aren't saying where the state would get the money to pay the bill. One possibility is $1.25 billion of the $2.7 billion New Jersey had committed to the project from toll increases could soon become available.
