Federal Investigation of Coal Mine Worker Death in Southwestern Pennsylvania

State and federal investigators are reviewing the death of a worker at an underground coal mine in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Somerset County Coroner Wallace Miller says 43-year-old Ricky Kline, of Central City, died of blunt force chest injuries.

Mark Tercek, the president of LCT Energy, which owns the Brubaker Mine, says Kline died after becoming trapped between a continuous mining machine and a mine rib. The machine uses a rotating steel drum to scrape coal from the mine's walls.

Tercek says the mining crew included licensed emergency medical technicians who rendered first aid to Kline before he was taken to Windber Medical Center.

The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Pennsylvania Bureau of Mine Safety and U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
