Fatal Fire at Delaware County Assisted Living Facility

A resident of a Delaware County assisted living home is dead after a fire tore through the the facility late Wednesday night.

Workers at the Elwyn Institute, located on the 100 block of Elwyn Road in Middletown Township, Pennsylvania, carried, walked or helped 39 people to escape the blaze, which broke out in one of the units of Smith Hall around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.

The fire took the life of one man, approximately 70-years-old, who lived in the Elwyn Institute, which provides housing and other services for the eldery and people with special needs, authorities said.

A security guard and another employee were also taken to a local hospital for observation, officials said.

Workers moved the residents who were evacuated to other locations owned by the Elwyn Institute.

The fire is under investigation.
