Fatal Crash on I-95 in Delaware

Police: 19-year-old wasn't wearing seat belt

One woman is dead and two other people have been hospitalized after a car accident closed Interstate 95 near Newport for more than two hours early Saturday morning.

Investigators say that 19-year-old Anna Maria Silva of Wilmington was at the wheel of a 1995 Subaru Legacy and traveling north on the highway shortly after midnight. As Silva approached the off ramp leading to Delaware State Road 141, her car drifted on to the right shoulder and sideswiped a concrete Jersey barrier. Police say the car swerved out of Silva's control, traveling across all five northbound lanes before striking the median and coming to a stop in the left shoulder.

Silva was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers, Edward Wanamaker of Wilmington and Tylisha Webster of Newark, both 19, were taken to Christiana Hospital with minor injuries. Investigators say that none of the people in the car were wearing seatbelts.

Interstate 95 was reopened later Saturday morning after the accident was investigated and cleared. The crash remains under investigation and it is not clear if alcohol was a factor.
